About the Program

The LAWA Mentorship Program is designed to support scholars through an intentional mentor-mentee relationship. Many LAWA Scholars are first-generation college students. Through mentorship, scholars have the opportunity to connect with someone who can share perspective, offer encouragement, and help them navigate academic, personal, and professional goals.

The program is an 8-month commitment and includes regular communication between mentors and mentees, monthly check-ins, and support from the LAWA team throughout the year.

Why Mentorship Matters

Mentorship helps scholars:

  • Build confidence and leadership skills

  • Strengthen college and career goals

  • Grow their professional network

  • Explore internships, jobs, and career pathways

  • Feel a stronger sense of belonging

  • Reduce isolation during college

  • Receive support from someone invested in their success

  • Stay connected to LAWA and the broader community

Program Commitment

The LAWA Mentorship Program is an 8-month commitment. Mentors and mentees are encouraged to meet regularly and stay in communication throughout the program year.

LAWA will provide tools, guidance, and resources to support each match, including meeting prompts, check-in forms, and topic ideas connected to College Hacks and scholar development.

The Mentorship Program was developed in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) – Business Honors Program.

“The best way a mentor can prepare another leader is to expose him or her to other great people.”

“Mentoring is a two-way street. The mentor gets wiser while mentoring, and the mentee gains knowledge through his/her mentor.”
