There are two types of
scholarships we offer:
|

Merit & Achievement Scholarship
for Latin American students
Purpose:
The purpose of the Merit and
Achievement Scholarships is to recognize the academic achievement of Latin
American Students and to encourage them to continue
their education. Scholarships will be no more than $500 (five hundred), $1.000
(one thousand dollars) and $2.000 (two thousand dollars) per individual, per year, to
students who have demonstrated the highest academic achievement and community
involvement. Actual amounts will depend on individual accomplishments.
Who can apply:
Any first or second generation
Latin American student who has been accepted to an institution of higher education,
and that in fact will attend school as a full time student, the entire academic
year of 2008-2009.
How to apply:

Complete the application and
fulfill all of the following requirements:

To be
presently a high
school male and female students in Mecklenburg, Concord/Cabarrus, Gaston,
South Iredell/Mooresville, and Union county.

Submit a high
school
transcripts with an un-weighted grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher .

Attach two letters of
recommendation from two teachers, or one teacher and a counselor who know
the academic performance of the student in the last year of high school.

Write a personal
letter (no more than two pages, typed, double spaced) explaining career goals and plans, personal, community and academic
interests, and the reason for applying for the scholarship.

Attach additional
letters of recommendation from extracurricular activities or community
related activities to support your application.

Submit a copy of
the College acceptance letter.

A personal
interview may be required.

Selection Process:
A Scholarship
Committee appointed by the LAWA Education Committee will select the
students who will be awarded the scholarships.
The selection
criterion is based on the following:

Un-weighted GPA
evaluation / 50%
-
AP and/or
Honor courses / 5%
-
Paid work
hours / 5%
-
Applicant's
personal
letter / 10%
-
Letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, employers / 15%
-
Extracurricular activities and community work / 10%
-
Special
circumstances to be considered / 5%

Youth
Scholarship Renewal
Latin American Women's Association merit and achievement scholarship renewal
2008
Purpose:
The purpose of the Merit and Achievement
Scholarship is to recognize current recipients of the LATIN AMERICAN
WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION Merit and Achievement Scholarships, and encourage them to continue pursuing excellence
in higher education.
The SELECTION CRITERIA is based on the following:
1. Official transcript* with a 3.0 GPS or higher and have a full time student
status. 50%
2. Personal letter reporting about academic and extracurricular activities
during the past school year. 50%
3. Fill out the renewal application.
*Transcript may be submitted at a later date, and be sent to the committee as
soon as it is available.

Latina Women
Scholarship Program
PURPOSE: To encourage the advancement of adult Latino women through
education to pursue a new career, continue a career, or business development.
WHO CAN
APPLY:
Any adult Latino woman, age 25 or older, who has been accepted into
an
educational program or certified course. The program must provide accreditation
and/or
certification of a trade, business, or academic degree. (2-year or 4-year
college degree.)
HOW TO
APPLY: Complete the enclosed application and fulfill the following:
Basic Requirements
1.
Hispanic/Latino descent.
2. 25 years of age or older.
3. Must reside in the Charlotte Mecklenburg area, Union, Gaston, Cabarrus,
Iredell, or
Rowan counties.
4. Must have proof of enrollment in an accredited program or certified course
provided
by an institution.
5. Must be active in the community via participation or volunteer work for an
institution.
Additional Requirements
1. Complete
application form
2. Send proof of enrollment into a program in the geographical area outlined
above
3. Two letters of recommendation: One from the organization where volunteer work
is
performed, peers, or employers. One from former teachers or current teacher. (No family members
letters)
4. A personal letter describing yourself, career goals, plans, and reason for
applying for
the scholarship.
SELECTION
PROCESS: A scholarship committee appointed by LAWA's Education committee
will select the recipient of the scholarships from applicant pool based on
established criteria.
Recipients will be immediately notified by e-mail or phone.
DISTRIBUTION: After LAWA receives a copy of the receipt of paid tuition/fee
for the current
year, stating length of program, dates, and student information, a check will be
presented to at the Latin American Forum on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 - Mint
Museum of Art.
