SCHOLARSHIPS GENERAL INFORMATION



Purpose:

The purpose of LAWA Scholarships is to financially support and encourage Latino students to pursue higher education. Only students meeting all the requirements will be considered for LAWA scholarships. Scholarships are awarded once per year to students who have demonstrated academic achievement, financial need, and community involvement.

Selection Process:

A Scholarship Committee appointed by LAWA meets in early spring to select the students who will be awarded the scholarships based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, financial need, and community involvement.

Awards Presentation:

An awards ceremony to present the scholarships is scheduled in June or July of each year. All scholarship recipients are invited.

Application Deadline:

Must be postmarked no later than April 5, 2010.

SPECIFIC SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Youth Scholarship for New Applicants

Who Can Apply:

Any first or second generation Latino student who will be graduating from high school, and has been accepted to an accredited college or university to attend as a full time student the entire academic year. Youth scholarships will range from $1,000 (one thousand dollars) and above.

How To Apply:

Complete the 2010/2011 Youth Scholarship Application. Must meet all of the following requirements:

• Be a male or female high school student whose home address is in Mecklenburg, Concord/Cabarrus, Gaston, South Iredell/Mooresville, or Union county.
• Have an un-weighted grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher +
• Send fall semester high school transcript (official copy not required).
• Send two letters of recommendation from either two teachers, or one teacher and a counselor. Letters must detail academic performance and student’s character and achievements in the last year of high school.
• Send an additional letter of recommendation (not from a teacher or counselor) describing extracurricular or community- related activities that support the application.
• Send a personal letter explaining career goals and plans; personal, community and academic interests; reasons for applying for the scholarship; and, if applicable, any obstacles that had to be overcome during school years.
• Send a copy of the college acceptance letter *.
• Be available for a personal interview if requested.
+ In the event the final GPA falls below the required 3.0 on spring semester official transcript, the student will NOT be entitled to an award
* No funds will be disbursed unless the following are received: (1) One copy of spring semester official transcript; (2) Proof of Enrollment; and (3) Student Billing Statement from the respective academic institution including Name and Address where to send awarded funds.

YOUTH SCHOLORSHIP RENEWAL

Purpose:

The purpose of the renewals is to financially support, and encourage current scholarship recipients to complete their higher education.

Who Can Apply:

Any Latino student who received a LAWA scholarship the previous year, and who will attend an accredited college or university as a full time student the following entire academic year. How To Apply:

Complete a Youth Scholarship Renewal Application.

Must meet all of the following requirements:

• Be a male or female college student whose home address is located in Mecklenburg, Concord/Cabarrus, Gaston, South Iredell/Mooresville, or Union county.
• Be a sophomore, junior or senior attending college anywhere in the United States of America, who has previously been awarded a LAWA scholarship.
• Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. +
• Send a transcript from the previous fall semester * (official copy not required).
• Send a personal letter explaining academic achievements and community involvement during the past academic year.
• Send a letter of recommendation from either an instructor or advisor. Letter must detail academic performance and student’s character and achievements in the last year of college.
+ In the event the final GPA falls below the required 3.0 on spring semester official transcript, the student will NOT be entitled to an award
* No funds will be disbursed unless the following are received: (1) One copy of spring semester official transcript; (2) Proof of Enrollment; and (3) Student Billing Statement from the respective academic institution including Name and Address where to send awarded funds.

WOMEN'S SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose:

To encourage the educational advancement of adult Latino women to pursue a new career, continue a career, or business development.

Basic Eligibility:

Any adult Latino woman, age 25 or older, who has been accepted into an educational program or certified course. The program must provide accreditation and/or certification of a trade, business, or academic degree (Masters or Doctorate programs excluded).

How to Apply

Complete the enclosed application. Must meet all of the following requirements:

• Must be a first or second generation Hispanic/Latino descent.
• Must be a female 25 years of age or older whose home address is located in Mecklenburg, Concord/Cabarrus, Gaston, South Iredell/Mooresville, or Union county.
• Must provide proof of enrollment in a program for a technical or non-technical career within the geographical area indicated above (Masters or Doctorate programs excluded).
• Must send proof of expenses indicating the total cost incurred.
• Must be active in the community via participation or volunteer work for an institution.
• Send a personal letter explaining career goals and plans; personal, community and academic interests; reasons for applying for the scholarship; and, if applicable, any obstacles that were overcome during school years.
• Send two letters of recommendation: one from the organization where volunteer work is performed; another one from former teachers, peers, or supervisors. (No family member letters) and student’s character and achievements in the last year of college.
• Must attend a personal interview with members of the Scholarship Committee.

WOMEN'S SCHOLARSHIP RENEWAL

How to Apply:

Complete the enclosed application. Must meet all of the following requirements:

• Must be a recipient of a LAWA Women scholarship in the past.
• Must provide proof of enrollment in a program for a technical or non-technical career within the geographical area indicated above (Masters or Doctorate programs excluded).
• Must send proof of expenses indicating the total cost incurred.
• Must be active in the community via participation or volunteer work for an institution.
• Send a personal letter explaining career goals and plans; personal, community and academic interests; reasons for applying for the scholarship; and, if applicable, any obstacles that were overcome during school years.
• Send documentation of successful completion of last course with at least a “B” as the final grade.
• Must attend a personal interview with members of the Scholarship Committee.
